Huh! As soon as I finished reading your post I checked my linkage and found just enough room for the shift rod to clear the bottom frame member, but all seems well. Maybe the first owner for some reason bent or attemted to re-shape the rod?
Now that you have it repaired, I hope you can have many miles trouble-free riding. I bought mine new in Feb.00 and have not had a single problem of any kind so far with 1900 miles. One thing about the Savage, the first 600 mile maintenance appears to be very important, after that, regular maintenance will give it a long life.
